The Bickley Valley is a slice of country life on the fringes of suburbia – just 5 minutes from Kalamunda. Its winding roads are a joy to drive, overlooking vineyards, orchards and natural bush. The pretty valley really comes alive in winter and spring when it’s lush and green. I recently revisited Plume Estate. A spot I’d first discovered about 5 years ago.
The boutique winery is home to a cellar door, plus a light and open dining room, which enjoys views out over the valley’s rolling hills. It has big Tuscan vibes. Plume’s wines are made at the nearby Myattsfield vineyard. Their range includes a sparkling pinot noir, a rosé made from merlot, chardonnay, merlot, shiraz and a fortified shiraz too.
Plume – The Food
More-ish pulled pork and slaw brioche sliders ($20) are just some of the share dishes on offer.
Super fresh Bickley asparagus and grilled haloumi with pickled onion ($18) is also very tasty.
We shared a well stocked mezze board ($36) between three of us. There’s olives, cheese salad, artichoke, Spanish ham and salami, stuffed peppers, jalapeño polenta and crusty bread.
The quality produce on the platter was very fresh. We added Egyptian dukka and EVOO ($9).
A light berry cheesecake for dessert was just the perfect size to finish.
A glass of wine went down very well with the food and we bought a bottle of rose to take home. The menu offers dishes like a cheese platter, pate, tacos, bruschetta and a small selection of desserts.
It’s a lovely little spot for nibbles and a vino. We enjoyed Plume and would certainly return again and again.
It’s no secret that I have a big love for the Perth Hills, in particular the Kalamunda area where I grew up. Back in the 1980s there wasn’t much to look at in the Bickley Valley – it was full of orchards, a couple of boutique vineyards and aromas from the Wheat a Bix factory. It’s still full of orchards and vineyards, though it is fast becoming an area full of cellar doors, cafes and restaurants that are all well worth a visit.
