Tom’s Kitchen, Carmel {CLOSED}

Fairbrossen is a gorgeous spot in the Bickley Valley for treating yourself to a slap up Sunday lunch. We’d been unsuccessful trying to book a table at another Bickley Valley winery, which was full to bursting – so we thought we’d give Toms Kitchen at Fairbrossen Carmel a try. They were also busy, but could squeeze us in at 1.30pm for a late lunch – which was fine with us.

I’d visited a few years before for afternoon tea. Now the Fairbrossen café is run separately to the winery under the name “Tom’s at Fairbrossen Estate”. On arrival, we were shown to our tables. The open dining room looks out onto the boutique vineyard and wishing well below.

Our waitress was friendly, but seemed rushed. We were told the specials and kids menu options before we were even seated. We also weren’t brought water or a drinks menu.

Once the waitress returned to take our food order, I asked for the drinks menu. Being a winery, I’d imagined a glass of vino would go down a treat with a lazy lunch. Unfortunately, the restaurant is not licenced. The idea is to purchase a bottle of wine from the neighbouring Fairbrossen cellar door and bring it to the restaurant BYO style. So, we didn’t bother with the wine. It would have been helpful if this was explained on arrival.

Besides, the drinks issue, everything else ran smoothly. I picked the pork belly main and loved the tender belly meat, slow cooked to porky perfection. The delicious dish was served with duck fat potatoes, red cabbage, an interesting apple-orange marmalade and adorned with crispy crackle.

My mum enjoyed the pan fried barramundi, served with juicy Exmouth prawns and a chunky salsa fresca.

Kids are catered for with a couple of choices. The burger was a generous size, good quality and served with shoe string fries, salad and fruit. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from Little Chef.

At the cellar door, there’s wine to suit all tastes. From sparkling, rose, shiraz, tempranillo. The family run winery also has a small vineyard in Margaret River where they grow cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay vines.

“I’m fair Brosen” means “full to bursting” and we certainly were after lunch. Tom’s Kitchen at Fairbrossen in Carmel is a pretty spot in the Perth Hills. It’s a lovely taste of the country just 25 minutes from the city.

Tom’s Kitchen at Fairbrossen is found at 51 Carmel Rd, Carmel.
